Morgadio Albarino
Wine Club Selection - April 2022
A gorgeous, fruit-driven Albarino from northwestern Spain's chilly Rias Baixas region. This wine showcases tart green apple with ripe kiwi and melon, leading into a palate replete with honeysuckle and salinity.
Morgadio Winery started as an experimental farm in 1984, before the Rias Baixas D.O. was even created. The estate is situated in the subdistrict of Condado do Tea. With a focus on producing world-class wine, they installed a gravity-flow facility at the bottom of the vineyard. Although these type of wineries range in style, the goal is simple: by using gravity to move fruit through the vinification process, the juice is handled more gently. Too much force through pumps can cause a wine to become over-extracted or experience too much oxidation. This system provides a gentler, minimal intervention approach to winemaking and requires less electricity. In 1996, Jose Luis Mendez and his daughter Ana took over the winery. They focus on innovation and creating ‘estate’ wines with their own personality while staying true to the vineyard’s roots.
