2019 Remhoogte Free to Be Red
Wine Club Selection - January 2022
Remhoogte is undoubtedly one of our all-time favorite wineries. They produce some of the best South African wines we’ve ever tasted, from fresh and fruity Chenin Blancs to brooding and earthy Pinotages. ‘Free to Be’ is a new line they have created to experiment with natural wine styles, based on principles of minimal intervention. The composition of these wines changes from vintage to vintage. This wine tastes like an elevated version of the Remhoogte ‘Soaring Eagle’ (a perennial customer favorite), and it’s already earned an impressive 93 Point score from Tim Atkin.
The 2019 ‘Free to Be’ is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% old vine Cinsault. Remhoogte utilized whole cluster fermentation, which promotes a fruit-forward character and herbal hints. To maintain freshness, they aged the Cab in stainless steel and the Cinsault in neutral French oak. The wine offers bountiful red fruit, plum, and smoky aromas, leading into a palate with flavors of red cherry, raspberry, black currant, and pepper. Unfined and unfiltered, it is medium bodied with bright, juicy acidity and a long, earthy finish.
