Wine Club Selection - August 2021
One of our new favorite Super Tuscans comes from a producer of delicious, sensual cult Brunello. For his Voliero Toscana, he takes Sangiovese grapes from a nearby vineyard and blends them with just a dash of Montalcino-grown Syrah to create the perfect wine for a trattoria that he owns.
The 2018 vintage of Voliero Toscana was blended from 85% Sangiovese and 15% Syrah, with the former coming a site close to Montalcino and the latter from Cortonesi’s Montalcino vineyards. This is a food-friendly red with aromas of earth and herbs leading into flavors of sun-dried tomatoes, red cherry, clay, and oregano on the palate, which is smooth and inviting. Only 500 cases produced.
“A fruity, plummy red with berry and cherry character and hints of chocolate. Medium body. Creamy tannins. Excellent value. Drink now.” – 91 Points, James Suckling
