Le Volte dell'Ornellaia
Tenuta dell’Ornellaia is one of the few history-making wineries responsible for transforming Italy’s reputation from “mass-market table reds” to wines that could compete with First Growth Bordeaux. For founder Marchese Lodovico Antinori, who was born into a wine dynasty that goes back for an unbelievable 26 generations, this remarkable feat just comes with the territory.
In the 1980s, Antinori decided to challenge the archaic Italian traditions he felt were limiting innovation and modernization. He began planting classic French varietals alongside Sangiovese and other native grapes – a move that meant his wines wouldn’t earn DOCG status, the mark by which consumers judged a wine’s value. He was banking on the fact that savvy drinkers would taste the quality of his wines without the government’s stamp of approval.
It was a huge risk – but, as history proves, it was a risk well worth taking. Today, 'Super Tuscan' blends like Ornellaia represent the cutting edge of Italian winemaking, earning top scores and commanding hundreds of dollars a bottle. We're very thankful that Antinori also created Le Volte dell'Ornellaia as his second label, so that we can experience his brilliance at an everyday drinking price!
"This is very Mediterranean in character with sage and rosemary to the blackberry and tar aromas. It’s medium-to full-bodied with medium, chewy tannins and a savory finish. Black-pepper undertones with cloves. Drink now." – 91 points, James Suckling
"Rosemary, sage and underbrush on the attack. Tight, extremely spicy, this feels full of freshly cut herbs with touches of earth. A cold start to the season meant late budding then a hot season later, giving an opulence in the final glass" – 90 Points, Decanter
"The 2019 Le Volte shows good freshness in its flavors of tangy cherry and crunchy blackberry. Hints of smoke and savory herbs lend complexity to the lively fruit tones" – 90 points, Wine and Spirits
