Born and raised on one of the oldest wine estates in Portugal, Jose Neiva Correia was destined to become a winemaking master. He interned at top estates in Bordeaux and Germany, but it was the tutelage of Octavio Pato – one of the most famous oenologists of the 1970s – that elevated his skill to a world-class level. By the 1980s he had already gained famed around Portugal, playing a pioneering role in both the introduction of new varieties and in promoting healthy agricultural practices. After decades of achieving what most hope to master in a lifetime, Correia was named “Mister Wine,” the highest honor bestowed in the Portuguese wine industry. His devotion to making high-quality wines at competitive prices is one of the many reasons we love his selections. His personal motto says it all: “if I was a car manufacturer, my aim would be to produce Mercedes at the price of Volkswagens.” Correia's 2014 Grand'Arte Shiraz epitomizes that ideal. This stunning 90 Point wine was named one of Wine Enthusiast's Top 100 Best Buys. It offers rich fruit, soft textures, intense flavors, and supple tannins. Despite the implication of 'Shiraz' as a 'New World' wine, enticing flavors of roasted plums, spiced blackberries, and cracked peppercorns make it more like a northern Rhone Syrah (and a much better value).
