Alfaro Family Vineyards 'Dragon Slayer'
Richard and Mary Kay Alfaro sold their successful baking business to Sara Lee and used the proceeds to buy their first vineyards, which they converted from orchards. Today, Alfaro Family Vineyards continues to be one of the most exciting microwineries in California, producing just hundreds of cases of any given wine.
One of our favorites is Dragon Slayer, a wine that is exactly what you want a California red blend to be: ripe and fruit-forward yet very well-balanced. The Alfaros source fruit for Dragon Slayer from vineyards planted as early as 1908, and that ancientness lends beautiful complexity, flavor, and depth to the wine through reduced grape yields.
It offers intriguing aromas of cherries, dried tomatoes, and baking spices that lead into raspberry, stewed tomatoes, plums, and cocoa on the palate, which is medium-bodied and peppery on the finish. Comprising of Sangiovese, Zinfandel, Carignane, and Syrah, it seamlessly bridges New World California and Old World Italian nuances. Dragon Slayer is fantastic with pizza, Game of Thrones marathons, and Dungeons & Dragons games. Only 1200 cases produced, all unfined and unfiltered.
