Domaine A. Berthet-Rayne V.V. Cairanne
Wine Club Selection - November 2021
Until recently, A. Berthet-Rayne’s wines were classified under more basic Cotes du Rhone and Cotes du Rhone Villages, and some of their value bottlings still are. Now, their exceptional Cairanne bottlings rank with the best reds in the Rhone, competing with the likes of Chateauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas. Still a family operation, Domaine A. Berthet-Rayne is dedicated to sustainability and is certified organic.
This stupendous Cairanne exhibits a splendor of dark fruit and floral garrigue aromas, leading into bold flavors of blueberry, plum, violet, and thyme. Juicy acidity, medium tannins, and hints of anise and bramble lead into a long, peppery finish.
“Unoaked and resplendent in fruit, this full-bodied, vibrant red highlights pristine blackberry and raspberry flavors cut by firm strikes of granite and a dazzling acidic backbone. A blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 20% Carignan, it’s thirst-quenching when young but should maintain its vitality through 2024.” – 91 Points, Wine Enthusiast
