Bodegas Zestos Old Vine Garnacha
“A staggering value.” “An unbelievable wine for the price!” - Robert Parker.
Located in San Martin Valdeiglesias just northwest of the city, Bodegas Zestos has earned a reputation for producing small batches of the most expressive and mineral driven Garnachas in all of Spain. Their 2019 Old Vine Garnacha, which is produced from vineyards that were planted 50-70 years ago, show the complexity and balance of a wine triple its price!
The secret, of course, is the older the vines, the more compelling the wine. Old vines are favored by winemakers for a few reasons: For starters, their roots run deep, pulling nutrients and water from far below the surface (translating to little variation between vintages). Time-tested vines pretty much take care of themselves, requiring minimal human intervention. Ripeness is never an issue, and this more concentrated, perfectly ripe fruit translates to deeply satisfying, robust wines. And that's Zestos to a T.
This luxuriously velvety wine offers aromas of ripe blackberries, baked cherries, and crushed flowers layered over raspberry and spice notes, ending with a mineral finish that showcases generous depth and energy.
“Vivid ruby-red. Aromas of ripe red and dark berries, spicecake and candied flowers are complemented by a smoky mineral nuance that builds in the glass. Sappy black raspberry and cherry flavors show good depth as well as energy. Silky and appealingly sweet, finishing with sharp focus and smooth tannins that fold into the wine's juicy fruit. Raised in stainless steel and concrete tanks.” – 91 Points, Vinous
