Joshua Maloney's beginnings were simple enough: after graduating from Cornell University with a Chemistry degree, he started in the industry as an assistant winemaker at Heron Hill Winery in New York's Finger Lakes region. Over the course of the next few years, however, it became clear that this kid had true talent. Like all promising young vintners, he set his sights on a gig in Napa Valley – and he hit the big time with a position at the legendary Stag's Leap Wine Cellars.

Working alongside some of the best of the best allowed him to catapult his skills to the next level, and soon he was awarded the prestigious title of Cellarmaster at Estancia Estates. Quite the list of accomplishments for a mere decade in the industry – but Maloney was just getting started. At the ripe old age of 32 he earned the title of Red Winemaker for the oldest, largest, and most esteemed winery in Washington State: Chateau Ste. Michelle. It was here that he was able to pursue his love affair with Cabernet Sauvignon – a grape that can be powerful yet elegant, and which truly expresses the vintage and vineyard in which it is grown. But he also quickly learned that Cab is “not for the faint of heart.”  “Discipline, study, and attention to detail are required to show the best of what this grape has to offer,” and fortunately Maloney has all these qualities in spades. His award-winning Cabernets showcase the diversity of soils and terroir within the Columbia Valley that won his heart.

Today, Maloney's skills are in high demand, and he works as Consulting Winemaker for a number of high-profile wineries in Washington and beyond. One of our very favorites of his bottlings – and a wine that sets the bar HIGH for quality – is the 2018 Be Human Cabernet Sauvignon. This plush, velvety wine epitomizes the true potential of Washington Cab, offering layered aromas of black cherry, currant and savory herbs with abundant dark berries and spice on the palate. Eighteen months in oak results in a full-bodied, structured wine with round, smooth tannins and a finish that just won't quit. It offers the flavors, concentration, and complexity to rival $50+ bottles from most of the big-name Napa producers out there (we're not naming any names). But somehow you can pick up this stunning 91 Point Editor's Choice from a world-class winemaker for under $20 a bottle!

“This wine is unmistakably Cabernet, with its aromas of black currant, spice and dark fruit. The palate brings seriousness uncommon to see at a wine at this price, rich through the middle with plenty of structure to back it up.”91 Points & Editor's Choice, Wine Enthusiast
