Lake County, California
Tastes Like: Blackberry, Raspberry Compote, Toasted Vanilla
After growing up in Healdsburg and spending his early career at premier wineries in Napa and Sonoma, it’s fair to say that Clay Shannon knows northern California like the back of his hand. So it’s quite telling that he decided to found his own winery in Lake County, rather than one of the bigger tourist destinations to the south. This relatively unknown stretch of the North Coast might be the last place in California where you can make quality-driven, sustainable wines… and still keep prices affordable.
There’s no doubt that Clay is producing fruit of impeccable quality: after all, he sells off more than half of his grapes to big name brands in Napa and Sonoma each year. But for the wines he’s producing under his own Shannon Ridge label, value is the top priority. These wines have long been critic favorites, regularly earning scores of 90+ points vintage after vintage – all while selling for under $20. And even Clay’s ‘top end’ wines, like the Urgency Zinfandel, offer premium quality at a fraction of the price of Napa.
The volcanic soils of the Urgency vineyard produce wines with gorgeously rich, densely-packed flavors, showcasing notes of crushed blackberries, spiced vanilla, raspberry compote, and toasted oak. Even at its winery price of $30 a bottle, this little gem packs quite a punch. And at our lowest price this weekend of just $6.99 on a case?
A mind-blowing bargain!
