Renwood Old Vine Zinfandel
Amador County, California
Tastes Like: Dark Berries, Smoked Chocolate, Baking Spices
This knockout bottle comes from Renwood Winery, the “Zin Masters” who Wine Spectator has said are “bringing out the best in California Zinfandel.”
The story begins in 1993, when owner Robert Smerling chased his love of Zinfandel from Wall Street all the way to Amador California, enamored by the region’s rich history and incredible vineyard sites. The foothills here in the Sierra Nevada Mountains are home to some of the oldest Zin vines in the entire world, and the picturesque location is the perfect place to allow the truest expression of the fruit to shine while preserving the essence of the terroir. Zinfandel grows best in mild climates, so the combination of shallow soils, high elevations, and warm days tempered by cooling mountain breezes are precisely what those old vines need to thrive.
Over the past three decades, Renwood Winery has earned a reputation for consistent highly rated reds that wholly embody the “iron fist in a velvet glove” category. Even compared to their highly respected neighbors, Renwood stands in a class of their own. They focus on dry farming, a centuries-old technique that results in lower yields of ripe, flavorful, finesse-driven grapes that pack both weight and balance.
In short – big, rich, concentrated wines that offer dialed-up flavors and complexity!
“Intense ripe fruit flavors meet spicy smoky complexity in this full-bodied, concentrated and well-structured wine. It has a deep blueberry and blackberry core surrounded by hints of black pepper, baking spices and wood smoke that keep it interesting from the first whiff to the lingering finish.” – 92 Points & Editor’s Choice, Wine Enthusiast.
