2015 Mount Eden Estate Chardonnay
Tastes Like: White Peach, Minerals, Brioche, Lemon Zest
Founded all the way back in 1945, Mount Eden is one of California’s oldest boutique producers, and they also boast the longest lineage of estate-grown Chardonnay. Vintner Jeffrey Patterson is firmly dedicated to crafting ‘vineyard wines’ – pure, nuanced bottles that truly express place and time, rather than wines that are heavily influenced by winemaking tricks and overpowering oak.
Located 2,000 feet above sea level in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Mount Eden Estate is perfectly poised for Burgundian-style Chardonnay production. The low-yielding vines are planted in austere, infertile Franciscan shale on a cool, exposed mountaintop. This challenging climate produces wines of rare elegance, along with incredible ageability seldom seen outside of France.
“The 2015 Chardonnay Estate comes all from the estate vineyard and mostly from a block of vines planted in 1990. Aged in 50% new oak, it’s another brilliant Chardonnay from Jeffrey Patterson that has a rich, concentrated, classic style as well as ample honeyed minerality, orchard fruits, and hints of brioche and toasted spice. Pure, medium to full-bodied and impeccably balanced, you can enjoy bottles today or cellar for 10-15 years, if you’re so inclined.”
