Maison Galhaud was first founded in 1901, and today the estate is still worked by the family who founded it. The winery takes its name from Leon Galhaud, the first winemaker and great-grandfather of current owner Jean-François. They make a wide range of styles: everything from Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Bordeaux from their home in the famous Right Bank, to wines from grapes that don’t normally grow in the region (such as Grenache and Viognier), to white and red Crémant de Bordeaux. They belong to a dwindling number of producers of Crémant, a style which isn’t as common as Crémants from other regions. This is part of a general family goal to improve not just the wines of Bordeaux but the entire country as well.
This classic Bordeaux Crémant blends 70% Semillon, 20% Muscadelle, and just 10% Sauvignon Blanc. It’s an elegant, rich, and nutty style for those of us who love more autolytic (yeast-driven, as opposed to fruit-driven) styles of sparkling wines and Champagnes. Aromas of apricot, toast, and nuts waft out of the glass, leading into flavors of honey, brioche, and lemon zest. The palate is light-to-medium-bodied and slightly earthy. The wine has a fine yet persistent mousse and a long, pleasing finish.
