2015 Scopone Brunello di Montalcino
Made From: Sangiovese Grosso
Tastes Like: Blueberry, Dried Cherry, Mocha, Leather
Since the 1990s, Scopone has become a beacon for Tuscan winemaking, known for their beautifully structured yet accesible bottlings. The historic estate was first planted to vines in the early nineteenth century, but when the second World War tore through Italy, much of the property was abandoned.
In 1992 the Genazzani family acquired these 40 hectares in the heart of Montalcino, seeing the outstanding potential to revitalize the vineyards back to their former glory. Their goal was simple: to combine their love and passion for old Tuscan wine traditions with modern state-of-the-art technologies, producing beautifully balanced wines at prices that easily outcompete their more famous neighbors.
Their first vintage was a success. The second was incredible. Twelve years later, Fattoria Scopone is producing some of the best Brunellos we’ve come across at prices that almost seems ludicrous! And in a celebrated vintage like 2015, which critics lauded for “consistently high quality,” “intensity, depth, and generosity,” “power and purity” – or, to put it in the words of Andrea Mantengoli, “a vintage made by God” – Scopone’s Brunello di Montalcino is the greatest to date.
This incredibly terroir-driven wine offers intricately layered, enticing flavors of crushed black cherries, blueberries, worn leather, baker’s chocolate, espresso, and dusty earth. Three years of oak aging brings polished, ultra-fine tannins, a beautiful texture, and a remarkably long finish. This full-bodied, opulent, expertly hand-crafted selection is the definition of ‘magic in a glass.’ With only 1,500 cases produced from this picture-perfect vintage, this is easily one of the finest Italian wine values we have on the shelf.
“A dense and rich Brunello with sliced berries, dark chocolate, blueberries and wet earth. Full body. Tannic and structured. Long and flavorful. Give it three or four years of bottle age to soften.” – 94 Points, James Suckling
